The approach to the Door accelerates.

There’s been a tangible change in the energy within the space. Before, it felt like we were putting together the framework of the Silver Door. Now, it feels like we’re really fleshing it out and starting to discover more of the space’s personality.

A photo from the back corner of the space. Against the left wall are two sets of lockers. On the floor in front of them rests a half-assembled black desk hutch. To the right are a glass counter, three black rolling chairs, and a large cardboard box haphazardly loaded with cardboard scraps and other detritus.
A view of the space just past the archway. (It's not askew, it's... um... a Dutch angle!) To the far left are some chairs, a wide-format printer, and a more typical office printer, then a column. To the right of the column is a black counter with several cardboard boxes in front of it. Behind that, one can see black slatwall with rows of books displayed on it. At the center in back is a tall cooler stocked with a variety of cans. Toward the right is that same desk hutch.
A closer look at that slatwall. It has aluminum slat inserts that show up as silvery lines running the entire length. More importantly, it holds three rows of clear acrylic displays that themselves hold a variety of books and boxed sets. Underneath all this sits a set of shelves stocked with random items on top and books and such within each cubby.

From here, the visible changes will be more subtle. Aside from the removal of the rest of the cardboard boxes, that is. That’ll be dramatic. So, here’s what else we’ve been up to!

  • We’ve always admired the custom acrylic book displays used by our good friends at Phoenix Comics & Games, so with their permission, we copied the design. Then we took it to Clear Cut Plastics – the last acrylic fabricator in Seattle! – and the results are simply stunning, as seen above. Thanks to the perfectly transparent nature of the acrylic, the books on the top row are visible even when sitting. We’re pretty excited about these.
  • We thought our lockers would be delivered a couple weeks later than this, so it’s a pleasantly convenient surprise to have received them early. They’ll easily hold all the books, character sheets, and accessories that are part and parcel of tabletop roleplaying. This is especially great for groups with players who easily lose track of their character sheets. (A couple of our ushers are like that. We sympathize.) The lockers will be rentable on a first-come-first-served basis to our Storyteller and Community Titan members.
  • While most such establishments have a back office, we call ours a “build room” – after all, it’s where we’ll be putting together maps and such. Also, it’s adjacent to the break room, and we couldn’t resist the pun. This comes up because we now have a proper desk in there, which won’t really be visible to most folks but will certainly be more convenient for us than putting our computer on the floor. Some of us have done the computer-on-the-floor thing in the past. It’s not advised.
  • To use a juggling metaphor, there are a lot of balls, plates, and bowling pins in the air at present. Now that nearly all the fixture and furniture assembly is done, we’re focusing on the last details of general operations, and procuring the last of the stuff we need to get started… and there’s plenty of both.
  • We don’t just provide space to play roleplaying games – we also have experienced GMs and storytellers (our preferred term) who will run house games that anyone can join, whether for a session or a whole campaign. The planning is underway for the first couple of these, and we’ll post a schedule as soon as we can finish integrating our scheduling software with our website.
  • On that subject, we have a new survey up! We’re looking for folks interested in running community events. Perhaps you’d like to head a miniatures painting night, a class on improv for roleplayers, a meetup for GMs to discuss the craft… or some secret fourth thing? Tell us about it in our brief event survey and we’ll do what we can to help you make it happen.

As we near our opening date of October 17 – for certain this time! – the excitement is mounting. Very soon, we’ll be opening the door to our space… and the door to your own worlds. We’re getting so close! Thank you for reading. Next week: The final pre-opening newsletter.
