Progress is steady at the Silver Door.

Friends, in the interest of transparency, we must admit… we’re not as ready as we thought we’d be by now. Several unforseen delays have required us to push back our opening date to Saturday, October 17. The silver lining is that this gives us more time to go through everything and make sure it’s as perfect as possible for our guests!

In the meanwhile, we have some pictures of the ongoing work:

Through a tall arch one can see the now-familiar purple walls, black ceiling, and grey and slate-grey carpet of the Silver Door. Beyond and to the left, a large black counter can be seen next to a round pillar. On top of and around it are a variety of boxes, some unopened and some ready for recycling.

Behind all that sits one of our founders, Orrery. To the rightright side, some slatwall is visible along with part of a low shelving unit loaded with random items.

Now that we’re able to, we’re filling the space with everything it takes to make the Silver Door dream a reality. With so many thanks to the help of a few good friends, our counters, shelving, and chairs are all assembled much faster than expected. Everyone who’s sat on the chairs (and this includes some heavier folk) has remarked that they are, in fact, very comfortable.

As a note, the third photo above shows the interior of the game room known as the Circle. The actual table is larger than the composition of the photo makes it seem.

There’s more news to share:

  • Much to our embarrassment, we only recently learned that Google Mail has been rejecting our mailing list because of some missing configurations on our mail server. Those have now been fixed and tested. To all our Gmail subscribers (and possibly others) who are seeing these messages for the first time, we offer hearty greetings! Previous news entries can be found at our news page.
  • With so many thanks to the help of a few good friends, our shelving and chairs are all assembled much faster than expected. Everyone who’s sat on the chairs (and this includes some heavier folk) has remarked that they are, in fact, very comfortable.
  • That large cooler – the one still in the tall box above – will be stocked with all manner of drinks and a few snacks that are delicious when cold. We’ve made sure to cover a wide variety of tastes, with plenty of familiar flavors and a selection of unusual choices that promise to reward the adventurous.
  • We have printers! Most notably, the wide-format printer has been tested and approved. We’re looking forward to printing maps and the like for our guests.
  • We also have our air purifiers now! These far exceed the recommended standards for air quality even while remaining whisper quiet. After we set them up and ran them for an afternoon, the lingering scent of fresh paint disappeared from the space, so they’ll definitely do the job.
  • The new Pinehurst light rail station has opened to much fanfare. We’re excited because it means very convenient transit to our location! More information on how to get to the Door can be found at our info page, though it would be best to wait until we open to visit.
