Happenings at and through the Door.

Our opening week has been incredible. We’ve seen quite a few old friends, made quite a few new ones, and shared cake with all. Speaking of new friends, our lead story this week is about our very first community event!

On November 18 at 7 PM, the TTRPG Book Club will be meeting here at the Silver Door to discuss Microscope, a GM-less world-building game by Ben Robbins. This well-known and influential game is aptly described on its front cover as “a fractal role-playing game of epic histories”. We’ll have plenty of copies available for reading and purchase. All are welcome to attend!

There’s been a lot more going on here. Here’s a summary:

  • We’re close to having our public event calendar up, so it’ll be super easy to find out what interesting events (like the one above!) are going on.
  • Our online reservation system is finally active! Booking a room is as easy as picking a time slot from a calendar. Keep in mind that membership comes with a significant discount; if you haven’t had the chance visit our place yet and establish one, you can start your membership online and pick up your membership card when next you come in.
  • A large conundrum – how best to keep the echo down in the game rooms – has been handily answered with a community gift of several acoustic foam panels. Right now we simply have them propped up against the walls, but our plan is to frame them properly and get them hung as soon as possible. They make a huge difference already!
  • On the topic of room comfort, we’re still doing some experiments to find the right tone and amount of light for each room. It’s a little tricky, in part because we have to keep moving tables and putting the ladder out to get at the overhead lights… but it’ll all be worth it!
  • We’ve expanded our collection of drinks and snacks considerably. We have a few of the classics, but the bulk of our offerings come from smaller local brands that make exceptional fare, along with some treats from further afield.
  • Our treasurer has been hard at work sorting out paperwork as it pops up… and there’s so much that continues to pop up. The state of Washington has a great many worker protections which we wholeheartedly support, but the administrative angle is quite the challenge to keep up with!

We knew there would be plenty to learn about running this business, and we certainly have been learning. We strive to make the Silver Door as friendly and accommodating as possible, and we look forward to meeting each guest with warmth, respect, and hospitality. Thanks to everyone who’s visited for your patience and understanding as we build up – and iron out – our space and our methods. We’re dedicated to making the Silver Door your favorite place to meet and roleplay, and we hope to see you soon!
